Voting twice in the 25th Congressional district

Voters in the 25th Congressional district will get a chance to vote twice this election day.

They’ll select between Democrat Joe Morelle and Republican Jim Maxwell for a two-year term.

And they’ll also vote for those same candidates in a special election to fill out the remainder of the term for the late Louise Slaughter.

Democratic Monroe County Elections Commissioner Tom Ferrarese says this concurrent election will be held on November 6th, the day of the general election.

"It's required that we have a general election, but it can be done with the general election, so that's what they're doing.  And frankly it saves a lot of money by doing that.  Having a separate election would be very costly," he said.

He adds this is a rare occurance.

"I never tell people to vote twice.  Ever, ever.  But here you go, you can vote twice for your representative for Congress in the 25th District.  Once for the two-year term, and once for the unexpired term," he said.

From left to right on the ballot, the two-year term is first, followed by the special election.

The last time something like this happened was in 2010 in New York's 29th Congressional District, when Eric Massa resigned the seat.

Republican Tom Reed won both the special and general election in what is now known as the 23rd district.

He faces a challenge in the general election from Democrat Tracy Mitrano.
