Two more COVID-19 deaths reported in Monroe County

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

The Monroe County Department of Public Health on Sunday reported two more COVID-19 related deaths and 27 new confirmed cases.

That brings the count to 250 deaths in Monroe County during the coronavirus pandemic. One death was reported Saturday, after two straight days in which no deaths were reported.

The 3,238 confirmed cases to date include 144 people currently hospitalized, 17 of which are on ventilators in the intensive care unit.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced on Sunday that the state’s total hospitalizations on Saturday was 1,657, its lowest total since March 20. Cuomo also said 23 people in New York died on Saturday due to COVID-19, down from a record-high of 800 nine weeks ago. “New York State is leading the nation's reduction in the transmission of the virus,” Cuomo said.

This decline comes with the caveat that, nationwide, recovery from the coronavirus pandemic has been uneven. Cuomo said that 22 states are seeing increases in COVID-19 cases. In Florida, Saturday’s coronavirus case count jumped 35 percent over the previous day.

Sunday’s totals in Monroe County were spread over a wide range of ages, although of the 27 new cases there was a particularly high number of women in their 20s (six), and men between the ages of 10 and 19 (three). One female under 10 tested positive.

Monroe County has reported 2,454 people recovered from confirmed and presumed positive COVID-19 cases. The county reports a total of 59,130 tests reported, with the three-day average of daily tests taken in Monroe County currently at 1,144 tests per day.
