Monday is Earth Day, and as part of that environmental observance, some area roads will get a thorough going-over by state and local workers .

And those  employees are volunteering their time.

The New York State Department of Transportation says that workers from every region of the state will volunteer their time to collect and dispose of litter along various roads and highways.

The so called "Trash Blitz" is also intended to bring awareness to drivers that littering tarnishes the landscape and also threatens the safety of the roadways and the natural habitat surrounding it.

In the Finger Lakes region, the trash pickup will take place in Rochester along the Inner Loop from East Main Street to North Clinton Avenue starting 10:00 a.m. on Monday.

The NY DOT workers will be joined by volunteers from the Rochester Department of Environmental Services and the Monroe County Department of Transportation.

That means that the Inner Loop will be closed to all traffic on Monday  between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.

On-ramps to the Inner Loop will be closed in both directions. Drivers coming from I-490 will have to exit at State Street.
