Rochester native La’Ron Singletary has been appointed the city’s next permanent police chief.
Mayor Lovely Warren made the announcement Tuesday morning. Singletary has spent his entire career inside the Rochester Police Department, most recently as deputy chief of community affairs. As he accepted the post, Singletary broke down in tears.
“There is a saying, ‘Heavy is the head of he who wears the crown.’ With faith, family and friends, there is nothing that the Rochester Police Department and this community cannot accomplish,” said Singletary.
Warren said Singletary was selected after a national search that produced more than 20 candidates.
“I have no doubt that La’Ron will be an outstanding chief of police,” Warren said.
Singletary graduated from John Marshall High School in the Rochester City School District. He holds an associate degree from Monroe Community College, a bachelor’s degree from Keuka College and a master’s of public administration from the State University of New York at Brockport.
Deputy Chief Mark Simmons will remain interim chief until Singletary is confirmed by City Council. Warren said the process will likely be complete this July. Singletary said he’ll work closely with Simmons during this process.
