Schumer Wants Federal Funds For Lake Water Monitoring

cityofrochester.gov

Senator Chuck Schumer makes a stop at a Lake Ontario Beach Tuesday  to talk about water quality.

The New York Democrat is coming to Rochester to make a push for nearly ten million dollars in funding that he says got eliminated in the current federal budget.

Schumer says that money goes toward critical monitoring of water quality and pollution.

The senator notes that Lake Ontario waters near Monroe County have been designated one of the areas of concern by the Environmental Protection Agency and he says Ontario Beach has been named one of the nation's top 20 worst beaches by the Natural Resources Defense Council.

Schumer says the water quality issues hurt tourism and the Rochester economy as well as impact the quality of life for local residents.  Schumer is also going to push for legislation that will direct funding to aid in the cleanup  of pollution and sediment  at beaches and wetlands.
