RPD officer stabbed and suspect shot by police have been identified

Rochester Police have now identified the officer they say was stabbed by a man on Sunday, as well as that suspect.

Both suffered what were described as non-life threatening injuries.

The officer is identified as Brian Cala, a 22 year veteran of the RPD. The suspect, 20 year old Jamal Dima of 108 Glendale Park now faces a charge of attempted aggravated assault of a police officer.

Police say it happened at about 11am on Sunday, when officers responded to Glendale Park for a report of a man breaking out windows and tailights on a vehicle. When Officer Cala knocked on the door of 108 Glendale, police say Dima made a beeline toward Cala, stabbing him once in the face. Cala fired five rounds, hitting Dima once in the left hand/wrist area. Dima ran away, but was caught  near the 400 block of Dewey Ave.

Both Cala and Dima were treated and later released from the hospital. Police say additional charges may be sent to a grand jury.

Rochester Mayor Lovely Warren issued this statement on Sunday:

"Our police officers put themselves at risk every time they put on their uniform. Sadly, today, one of Rochester's finest was injured while protecting our city. While I am heartened to hear that the injured officer will be released from the hospital and heading home soon, I ask all of our residents to pray for him and his family. I am thankful that no one was more seriously injured in this incident and wish our officer a quick and full recovery."
