RPD investigates shooting on Monroe Ave. that killed 1 person and injured 2 others

Rochester Police are investigating a shooting on Monroe Avenue early Friday morning that killed one person and injured two others.

Officers were called to the area of Monroe Ave. and Woodlawn St, which is near Meigs St. at about 1:00 a.m. for a report of shots being fired.

At the same time, an AMR ambulance was in the area and was flagged down at the intersection. When officers arrived, they found a man in his 30s who had multiple gunshot sounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Also, another man and a woman, both in their 30s, were suffering from non-life threatening gunshot sounds. They were both taken to Strong Hospital.

The man who died has now been identified as 19-year-old Matthew Williams of Rochester.

Police say it appears there was some type of altercation at the corner of Monroe and Woodlawn which escalated into multiple gunshots being fired and the 3 victims being shot. There are currently no suspects in custody.

The death was the 19th homicide in the city so far this year; 10 of those homicides occurred in March.

Anybody with information is asked to call the Rochester Police Departments Major Crimes Unit at 911, 585-428-7616 or email MajorCrimes@cityofrochester.gov.
