RoCo moves ahead with 6x6, making a few changes along the way

A number of Rochester area arts organizations are grappling with major changes to events they had scheduled as they have had to close during the coronavirus pandemic, and also have taken a major hit to their revenues.

One local organization,RoCo, the Rochester Contemporary Art Center, is currently holding its major event for the year, the 6x6 exhibition. But Executive Director Bleu Cease says they are doing it in a different way.

That annual exhibition and fundraiser involves thousands of original artworks donated by local celebrities, artists and other people.  They are then offered for sale to the public for $20 each, and the artists’ names are revealed after you buy them.

Cease says that people wanting to donate artworks can still mail them in, but now he’s also offering a curbside drop-off spot at that gallery on East Avenue.

“We know that there are a lot of people at home, looking for creative projects and creative outlets, so hopefully this is another way for people to participate and connect and share in the art making process without being near each other,” Cease says. He notes that RoCo, “Always digitized all the artworks and put all the 6x6 artworks online for viewing and purchasing, so we’re sort of lucky in that 6 by 6 is largely an online project already.”

Cease says that he is also trying to come up with a way that the 6x6 exhibition could be used to benefit other local arts organizations as well.

The deadline for entries has been extended until April 25. Online sales begin on June 9. Like a number of local cultural and arts organizations, RoCo has had to close its gallery during the pandemic.
