RocMusic Program to Bring Music to City Youth

Free music lessons are coming to Rochester children at the David Gantt Community Center this school year.

As many as 40 kids will receive a string instrument and attend music lessons three times a week after school as part of the RocMusic program.

Rochester Mayor Tom Richards says the hope is to expose more city youth to Rochester’s musical legacy, "But for kids here on north street that seems so very far way, sort of unapproachable, so coming here into them now brings them into this heritage so they can participate in it. Whereas I don't think they would see themselves in that environment before."

RocMusic is funded through the Farash Foundation.

As part of the pilot program, Windstream Corporation awarded the city a $100,000 grant to build a music production studio.
