Rochester and NYS officials gathered at the city’s Public Market on Wednesday  to celebrate the completion of an $8.5 million improvement project.

Mayor Lovely Warren says it has been a center of commerce and culture for the city for 112 years, and she notes the market is an important source of fresh foods in Rochester, as well as adding to the city's cultural attractions.

“Not only is it one of the best places in the region to shop for affordable farm fresh foods, it is a premier venue to enjoy one of a kind events, such as popular flower city days, food truck rodeos and the bands on the bricks concert series.”

The project includes a new outdoor shed and a state-of-the-art indoor shed for customers and vendors.

Market manager Jim Farr says the structures have certainly come a long way from where things began over a century ago.

“This shed was built originally to house farmers in the winter time, and now, as you know, it has prepared foods and fish and meats; but now we do have state of the art facility that’s ready for us for the next 100 years.”

Funding for the project came from the city and state.

The market is open Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays year-round and another 47 days a year for special events.

The new indoor shed will be open for business this Saturday, July 15.
