The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has awarded nearly $2,000,000 to the Rochester Housing Authority.
The funds can be used for coronavirus-related needs, such as cleaning supplies, personal protective equipment, and childcare for public housing staff. Funding can also support transportation for health-based reasons including coronavirus testing.
The funds are a portion of the nearly $500 million in CARES Act funding for public housing, according to HUD Secretary Ben Carson. Rochester received the most funding in New York state outside of New York City.
Around 37,500 families receive Section 8 housing assistance in the Rochester region, according to the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights.
