Rep. Louise Slaughter kicks off re-election effort

Monroe County Dem. Committee/Facebook

Congresswoman Louise Slaughter kicked off her re-election campaign on Saturday. She spoke with campaign volunteers at the Monroe County Democratic Committee offices in Rochester as volunteers got ready to begin the petition process for the Fairport Democrat.

Slaughter said in her Facebook post that “So much of what progressives value are under siege by President Trump and Congressional Republicans, including the rights of workers, women and LGBTQ Americans.”

She says the upcoming election this year is an opportunity to keep the 25th district seat ‘blue’ and help “elect a Democratic Congress that will be a brick wall against the Trump agenda.”

Slaughter is running for a 17th term in Congress.

A local neurosurgeon, Dr. James Maxwell, is seeking the Republican nomination to run against Slaughter this year.

Originally Gates Town Supervisor Mark Assini had planned to try for another run at the seat, but withdrew after the Monroe County Conservative Party said it would not endorse him and would instead back Maxwell.
