Remembering "Fairport Five" 10 years after tragic crash

last-memories.com

It was 10 years ago this month, June 26, 2007, when five young women died in a tragic head-on crash in Ontario County five days after they graduated from Fairport High School.

Hannah Congdon, Bailey Goodman, Meredith McClure, Sara Monnat, and Katie Shirley were on their way to a Keuka Lake cottage belonging to one of their families at the time of the accident.

On Thursday, June 15, the girls' families are hosting their 7th annualblood drive in memory of them.  It’s from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. at St. John of Rochester at 8 Wickford Way. To make an appointment or donate, call 1-800-Red Cross or visit redcrossblood.org and use the code stjohnofrochesterfairport.

There is also a “Sleeves Up” campaign, an online tool which supporters can use to create a virtual blood drive and encourage their colleagues, friends or family members living nearby or far away to donate blood or platelets.

Click on the LISTEN link above to hear Stephanie Shirley, the mother of Katie Shirley, talk about the drive and about where her thoughts are one decade after her daughter's death.

Beth Adams joined WXXI as host of Morning Edition in 2012 after a more than two-decade radio career. She was the longtime host of the WHAM Morning News in Rochester. Her career also took her from radio stations in Elmira, New York, to Miami, Florida.
