Prayer at Public Meetings: A Discussion

The issue of prayer at public meetings is the subject of a panel discussion tonight, as the Supreme Court prepares to hear arguments next month in the case of Calloway v. the Town of Greece.

Two people filed suit against the town, arguing Greece has opened its council meetings with primarily Christian prayers.

Brett Harvey is defending the town of Greece

Harvey says the town is simply doing something that has been practiced for centuries.

And the town invites anyone in the community to lead the prayer.

Heather Weaver is an attorney with the American Civil Liberties Union, which supports the plaintiffs.

She says the ACLU feels if government is to be involved in prayer, it should be non-denominational or as inclusive as possible.

Weaver and Harvey present lead a discussion on the issue tonight at the downtown offices of Nixon Peabody at 6pm.
