Park Officials Monitoring Lilacs for Possible Early Bloom

File photo

The unusually warm weather we've been having may cause many of Rochester's famed lilacs to bloom early.

Mark Quinn, Superintendent of Horticulture for Monroe County Parks, reminds people this warm weather isn't going to harm the flowers.

But to time the annual bloom with the start of the Lilac Festival in mid-May, we'll need some help from Mother Nature.

Quinn adds not all lilacs bloom at the same time. Even if many of the lilacs bloom early, many of the later ones will provide plenty of color for the upcoming Lilac Festival in mid-May.
