One of the Seneca Park Zoo's river otters has died

The Seneca Park Zoo says that one of its three North American river otters has died.

Zoo officials say that at the age of 16, the otter, Heather, had far exceeded her median life expectancy of 12 years. She was being treated for dental disease and degenerative joint disease.

Seneca Park Zoo officials say they remain strongly committed to North American river otters with the program at the zoo, and their role in the Association of Zoos & Aquariums' Species Survival Program.

The zoo says their  12 year old male, Sailor, and 16 year old female, Sara, are also being monitored for similar age-related conditions, but they otherwise appear to be in good health.
