Nobel Prize recipient and former UR researcher to deliver commencement address in Rochester

A Nobel Prize recipient, who received her doctorate from the University of Rochester, will deliver the university’s commencement address in May.

Last October, Donna Strickland, a native of Canada, became the third woman ever to receive the Nobel Prize in Physics and the first woman laureate in University of Rochester history. She received her doctorate from the University of Rochester in 1989.

Strickland is professor of physics at the University at Waterloo in Ontario, Canada.

Strickland and Gérard Mourou, a former engineering professor and scientist at the University’s Laboratory for Laser Energetics, were recognized with the 2018 Nobel Prize for revolutionizing the field of high-intensity laser physics.

Strickland will speak at the university’s doctoral ceremony on Saturday, May 18 and will receive the Rochester Distinguished Scholar Award. The following day, Strickland will deliver the commencement address and be presented with the university’s George Eastman Medal which recognizes outstanding achievement and dedicated service.
