No AAA travel projections this Memorial Day weekend

There will be plenty of weather forecasts to keep you up to date heading into the Memorial Day weekend, but if you're expecting travel predictions from AAA, you're out of luck.

“For the first in 20 years, AAA is not issuing a Memorial Day forecast this year, and that's because the data would be skewed because of the pandemic,” said Elizabeth Carey, director of public relations for AAA of Western and Central New York. “With social distancing and the quarantine, it really brought travel to a halt.  So there's really no numbers or a survey to go by this year.”

AAA is joining the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in recommending people stay home, but Carey says they're seeing a pent-up demand for travel; they expect to see many more people out and about for the holiday weekend.

“It's a long weekend, the first long weekend of the pandemic, so we're going to see more people out than we've seen in months.” Carey said. “AAA is reminding everyone to use caution out there and stay safe.”

Last year, 43 million Americans took to the road for the Memorial Day weekend.

Carey adds a lot of people are suffering from cabin fever right now, and they are reaching out to AAA for information on future trips.
