New York's Presidential Primary Takes The Political Spotlight

File photo

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP & WXXI News) - New York primary voters will be able to report problems at the polls through a special hotline.

State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman announced that he has a hotline staffed by attorneys and staff in his Civil Rights Bureau for Tuesday's primary. The number is 800-771-7755.

The statewide hotline debuted in November 2012.  Schneiderman says his office fielded hundreds of complaints from voters and worked with local election officials to quickly address issues.

Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Hillary Clinton lead in opinion polling going into today's primary in New York, where both front-runners are playing on their home turf.

At stake are big delegate hauls and an opportunity to inch closer to their parties' nominations. Clinton's campaign says the Democratic race is essentially over already. A big win for Trump is crucial if he hopes to clinch the nomination before the party's convention in July.

Elections officials have worked to get the word out that the polls in our region are open from Noon to 9pm (unlike areas near New York City, and Erie County where they opened at 6:00 am)

Local officials have been hesitant to predict exact numbers, but they say there could be a large turnout for this day, since presidential contests in recent years have not seen this kind of contested primary.

WXXI will provide live coverage including reports from New York City and NPR starting at 8pm, and streaming at wxxinews.org
