New York state advises on tax-extension deadline

New York State Department of Health

It’s tax-extension season. For those who filed for a six-month extension deadline, the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance offers some advice.

If you did get one of those extensions,  the deadline to submit your taxes is on Oct. 15.

Taxpayers with adjusted gross household incomes of $66,000 or less in 2018 can file their taxes electronically using free software through the state Department of Taxation and Finance’s website. The state recommends that taxpayers file electronically rather than on paper for accuracy and faster processing.

The department also advises that people avoid common filing errors, such as including all sources of income, especially for those who worked multiple jobs.

State Commissioner of Taxation and Finance Michael Schmidt says that the state expects about 500,000 returns to be filed ahead of the extension deadline.

Schmidt also says that a range of filing resources are available online for free atwww.tax.ny.gov.
