rochesterregional.org

Groundbreaking was held Wednesday for a seven-story addition to Rochester General Hospital.

The new building, the Sands-Constellation Center for Critical Care is a part of a $300 million dollar system wide campaign at Rochester Regional Health, which runs Rochester General and several other hospitals.

Constellation Brands President & CEO Robert Sands, the Sands family foundations and Constellation Brands made a $20 million gift to support construction of the new building.

"This health system is here, solely for the benefit of the community.  It's for the community and it's run by the community," he said.

Vice President of operations for Rochester Regional Health, Don DeFrees, says the new building will feature over 100 private patient rooms.

"About 50 percent of the hospital is semi-private rooms.  So a patient has to share a room with someone else, share a bathroom, etc., Each room will be accompanied with their own bathroom own shower, a lot of natural light.  It will really transform our patient experience," he said.

The 4-year project still needs final approval from the state.

That's expected in July, when construction will begin.
