A New Baby Orangutan At The Seneca Park Zoo

Seneca Park Zoo/Tina Fess

The Seneca Park Zoo in Rochester has another new animal .  On the heels of last week's announcement about the two lion cubs, the zoo says it now has a baby Bornean Orangutan.

Kumang, the zoo's 35 year old matriarch, is the baby's mother. The father is Denda, a 10 year old who came to the local zoo two years ago.  Kumang has been at the zoo since 1991. She has since successfully raised three babies.

Zoo officials say the birth is a significant one because Bornean orangutans are considered endangered. The adult pair of orangutans live at the zoo's main building with Dara, who is Kumang's daughter.

Since the birth just happened early Monday morning, zoo officials did not immediately know the gender of the new baby orangutan.
