Monroe County officials look into potential blue-green algae at Ellison Dog Park

monroecounty.gov

Monroe County parks officials say they are investigating a potential blue-green algae bloom in the pond area of the Ellison Dog Park.

County Parks Director Larry Staub says that the pond area is closed until further notice. He says that samples will be collected by the Department of Environmental Services for analysis.

Contact with Blue-green Algae can make people and animals sick.

Officials say that if you or your dog recently visited the pond area, be sure to rinse any area of contact with clean water. If symptoms occur, contact a medical provider.

UPDATE:  Staub says the County's Department of Environmental Services has confirmed the presence of Blue-green algae in the pond, and the area will remain closed until "we're 100 percent sure that there's no risk and the bloom is gone, and there's no potential for harm for our owners or our dogs."

He adds dog owners can still use the traditional area of Ellison Dog Park, or any of the three other dog parks in Monroe County.
