A mixed report card on the region from ACT Rochester

ACT Rochester released its annual report card Thursday for the nine-county region, and the grades were mixed.

ACT Rochester uses data from the Center for Governmental Research and other sources to assess indicators like the area’s economic security, community vitality, and housing.

The data says those indicators are on a downward trend. Public safety, health and education are headed upward.

Ann Johnson is the executive director of ACT Rochester. She says community report cards clarify complex data.

“We bring people together once a year to talk from different perspectives about how data can inform action,” Johnson explained.

Johnson says that actions like New York state’s investment in the Rochester-Monroe Anti-Poverty Initiative was spurred by ACT Rochester’s data in years past.

“We’ve started to become more diligent at understanding what pockets of the community or what populations of people are having the biggest challenges and how do we build solutions,” Johnson said.

Johnson suggests that municipalities pay closer attention to data when making decisions.
