Local voters have plenty on their mind this election day

Alex Crichton

Voters kept filing into a polling place in West Irondequoit at a regular pace on Election Day, even with a consistent rain and windy conditions.

For many, the president of the United States was on their mind as they cast their ballot.

Trump has said he wants people to pretend he's on the ballot during this election.

"He'd be better off if he didn't say that.  He should let other people run. On their own," said voter Kent DeHond.

Ann Murphy said a lot of people are getting involved this year that probably would have passed on a mid-term election.

Voter Steve Mills didn't take his time casting his ballot this time around.

"I'll be honest with you, it might be irresponsible but I didn't even look who's on the ballot. Red.  'Red all the way?' Yeah, because you got to have change," he said.

Brendan Murphy says it's not a surprise turnout is strong because people have a strong position one way or another.

"The importance of mid-terms in general I think are better understood by the general public now so maybe this will set a precedent for people to be engaged in not just elections every four years but anytime there's an election for anybody that can impact your life," he said.

Jason Dreyer says this is a particular important election for young people.

"Because if they don't vote, they shouldn't talk about the trials and tribulations of their lives or how their jobs have been effected, or that they went to college for 4 to 8 years and they got out and they had no job.  They had a choice.  They had a choice 8 years, four years, 10 years prior to affect change, and this is the only way to do it," he said.
