The full House of Representatives is expected to take up articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump on Wednesday. But before that happens, a small House committee will discuss the issue on Tuesday.
It is the Rules Committee, and like his predecessor, the late Louise Slaughter, Congressman Joe Morelle, a Democrat from Irondequoit is a member of that panel.
He says the committee will basically set the rules for Wednesday’s debate.
“The Rules Committee is the smallest committee, there’s only 13 members, but we tend to have very cordial and civil conversations, we obviously don’t always agree, and the only members typically to appear in front of the Rules Committee are members of the House itself,” Morelle told MSNBC on Monday.
The Rules Committee has nine Democrats and four Republicans, so it is expected to vote to keep the text of the articles of impeachment approved by the Judiciary Committee intact; it will also set how many hours lawmakers will have to debate each of the two articles.
The full House vote on Wednesday to approve the articles of impeachment is expected to pass on a party-line vote. Two area Republicans, Congressmen Tom Reed of the Southern Tier and John Katko of Syracuse have already said they will vote against impeaching the president.
