The House of Representatives on Thursday approved a bill sponsored by Congresswoman Louise Slaughter to name the East Rochester Post office after Daryl Pierson.

The Rochester Police Officer died after being shot in the line of duty last September.

He was the first Rochester Police Department officer killed by gunfire in the line of duty since 1959.

Slaughter says having the post office named after Pierson, who is a native of that village, will be a constant memorial to him.

"Everybody now that goes into the post office in East Rochester will pause because he's on the door, or on the outside, to remember that Daryl Pierson lived there and was an extraordinary human being who gave everything he had for the safety of others," Slaughter told reporters.

Located on West Commercial Street in East Rochester, the historic post office was built in 1936 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Senate is expected to vote on the legislation in October.
