A fraternity at the University of Rochester suspended after hazing charges

rochester.edu

Officials at the University of Rochester say that a fraternity has been suspended because of hazing charges. A chapter of Sigma Alpha Mu (also called the Mu Rho chapter) has been suspended after the accusations were brought against them this past spring.

Officials say the fraternity did not contest these charges, and the university is  confident that no one has been seriously harmed as a result of this activity.

The U of R says that Sigma Alpha Mu accepted a Responsible Option agreement from the University, meaning that effective immediately the chapter is suspended, and all membership rights at the University will be revoked until June 1, 2022.

The Responsible Option is part of the University’s Student Code of Conduct policies where a student or group of students who may have violated the standards of the community can accept responsibility for the policy violation and forego a conduct hearing.

At the conclusion of the suspension, the Sigma Alpha Mu fraternity may have the opportunity to form their chapter once again with direction from Fraternity and Sorority Affairs in the Office of the Dean of Students.

Other details about just what the hazing activity involved were not released.
