Former University of Rochester professor of psychiatry Dr. Jack Herrmann has acted as a consultant for mental health professionals, hospital workers and clergy members who have been caring for the survivors of Friday's deadly shooting at a Connecticut elementary school. Dr. Herrmann developed a mental health disaster preparedness plan for New York State in the aftermath of the 9-11 terrorist attacks. He says it's important to consider tone of voice and genuine compassion for survivors of such tragedies. Dr. Herrmann says it is often not what you say, but how you say it, that is most beneficial to victims.
