A former longtime Rochester City Councilmember has died. He was 92.

Bob Stevenson, a Democrat who represented the Northwest District for 20 years from 1987 to 2007, died Friday.

His family says Stevenson was passionate about Rochester history and often led tours of the Genesee River Gorge. The Stevenson Trail, along the river in Maplewood, is dedicated to Bob Stevenson and his late wife Mary.

Stevenson grew up in northeast Rochester, and served as a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army, stationed in post-war Italy and Austria.

His family says that after a stint in production control at General Motors, “he pursued his true calling” and earned a Masters degree in education at the University of Rochester.

Stevenson taught physics, chemistry and general science for 30 years at Jefferson High School.

Mayor Lovely Warren, in a statement Saturday, called Stevenson, “a true community servant who was known by all for his kindness and generosity." She added "I join the many who remember him fondly in reflecting on all he accomplished for our city, his neighbors and his students. His memory will continue to serve as an inspiration to all of us to put the needs of others first as he did throughout his life.”

City Council President Loretta Scott said, “The passing of Robert Stevenson marks a major loss to the community.  As a neighborhood leader and city councilmember, Bob served for decades with boundless energy and total commitment to helping others."

Representative Joe Morelle (D-25), said on Twitter Saturday, "Bob was a wonderful man, a dear friend, and a dedicated public servant who worked tirelessly to strengthen the community he loved so much."

Funeral services will be announced at a later date.
