Fighting a fire is dangerous enough, but firefighters in Ontario County early Thursday had to battle a motel fire in the frigid conditions.
According to Ontario County deputies, firefighters and deputies were called to the Valley Motel at Routes 5 & 20 in East Bloomfield just after midnight.
They found heavy smoke coming from one of the apartments at that motel. Deputies went door to door evacuating the other units, which are all attached. A total of 13 fire companies responded, and authorities say the weather conditions made it extremely difficult for them.
The fire spread rapidly, destroying all of the units at the Valley Motel. One firefighter was taken to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation. The Red Cross is helping out since at least 10 residents of the motel need emergency housing. The cause of the fire has not been determined yet.
