A graduate of the Eastman School of Music has won a Pulitzer Prize.

Eastman alum Kevin Puts has been awarded this year's Pulitzer Prize in Music for his opera "Silent Night."

The prize is more than an honorary distinction - it includes a $10,000 award.

The prize-winning work "Silent Night: Opera in Two Acts" was commissioned and premiered by the Minnesota Opera in Minneapolis this past November.

In naming Puts's opera as the 2012 Pulitzer Prize winner, the committee described the work as"...a stirring opera that recounts the true story of a spontaneous cease-fire among Scottish, French and Germans during World War I, displaying versatility of style and cutting straight to the heart."

Puts is a native of St. Louis, Missouri. He received both his Bachelor’s Degree and his Doctor of Musical Arts Degree from the Eastman School of Music, and his Master’s Degree from Yale University.
