Students in the culinary program at East High School are preparing Thanksgiving dinners to feed some 12-hundred people in the Greater Rochester area.

Wegmans donated the turkey meals as part of Governor Cuomo's initiative to feed 35-thousand people statewide this holiday.

Lt. Governor Kathy Hochul was at East High's cafeteria helping prepare the meals.

"We're dealing with 600 pounds of potatoes right now, a hundred boxes filled with really fresh food. This is not frozen, this is hand-made by students here at East High School who are in the culinary program," she said.

For culinary student Treveeo Thomas, making 600 pounds of mashed potatoes and carving hundreds of turkeys has been a rewarding experience.

"Makes me feel real good to see people get a real good meal on this type of evening, and just to know that they'll have something to eat. (I'm) doing a good deed," he said.

10th grader Makarrah Ramsey is also in the culinary program.

"It's a good experience. I want to be a chef when I grow older, so it's a good experience. Just helping people makes me smile," she said.

Culinary Arts Teacher Jeff Christiano says this is a great opportunity for students to put their skills to good use, and make a positive impact at the same time.

The Irondequoit Kiwanis Club will deliver the meals tomorrow.

Hochul, who helped dish out some of the 600 pounds of potatoes, says something like this should happen every day, not just once a year.
