The Democrat and Chronicle will have a new downtown home. The newspaper announced on Tuesday that it will be putting up a new building at the corner of East Main Street and Clinton Avenue.

It will be a 42,000 square foot, two story building, being developed by the Pike Company. The timing of the move is uncertain right now, but publisher Michael Kane says the company plans to sign a long-term lease.

Among the details to still be worked out, discussions with the city about parking. But officials say the move is not contingent on the sale of the Gannett Building on Exchange Boulevard.  That location, where the paper has been for 80 years, is still up for sale.
