COVID-19 claims 2 more lives in Monroe County

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

The Monroe County Public Health Department said Tuesday that two more people have died of COVID-19 in the county. That brings the county's death toll from the disease to 252.

The pace of deaths has been slowing in recent weeks, with several days where the county reported no one dead from COVID-19.

Even as the Finger Lakes region begins to reopen, the health department said, case numbers have been staying lower than they were a month ago.

Still, the reopening brings risks, like the potential that people were exposed to the novel coronavirus at a Rochester tavern where masking and distancing were not practiced, according to the county health department's initial contact tracing efforts.

Infectious disease experts at both of Rochester's hospital systems have said the demand that COVID-19 cases are placing on the health care system is slowly diminishing locally, but they are concerned about spikes following reopenings and public demonstrations.

The number of people in hospitals for COVID-19 treatment in Monroe County dropped by five on Tuesday to 131, the health department said. Of those, 16 were on ventilators in intensive care units.

The county received 16 positive test results on Tuesday for people ranging in age from under 20 to 80 or older.
