This week, President Barack Obama tweeted a recommendation: he wants everyone to read venture capitalist Nick Hanauer’s piece on education in The Atlantic Monthly. Or rather, the piece is about what Hanauer calls “educationism.”
Hanauer says that he, a rich white man, thought for years that he could help fix America’s education problem by writing big checks and supporting reforms. He’s come to believe that no reform is powerful enough to overcome the effects of massive inequality and poverty. He writes that education is the symptom; an unequal economy is the disease.
Our guests debate it:
- Joe Klein, chairman of Klein Steel and advocate for education reform
- Bruce Popper, union activist, former vice president of 1199 SEIU, and member of the RMAPI Steering Committee
- Erika Rosenberg, president and CEO of the Center for Governmental Research
- Mercedes Phelan, organizer at Citizen Action of New York
