First hour: Special rebroadcast - Activist Jeremy Tjhung
Second hour: Different approaches to gift giving
What does it mean to devote yourself to a life of activism? In this special rebroadcast, we talk to a local activist who uprooted himself from New York City and left everything behind to help promote causes he cares about in Rochester. Jeremy Tjhung grew up on Akron, NY, where he says he was the only gay Asian kid in town. He moved to New York City to pursue a career in fashion and retail. In 2016, after the shooting at Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Tjhung joined Gays Against Guns, a grassroots organization committed to ending gun violence in America. In 2018, he moved to Rochester to bring his passion for activism to Monroe County; he said that’s where he saw the potential to do the most good. We sit down with Tjhung to hear his story, how he finds meaning, and how he’s leading local activists in a variety of efforts.
Then in our second hour, we continue an annual Connections tradition of discussing new and interesting ideas for gift giving during the holiday season. This time of year, many of us feel the obligation to get gifts for others. Sometimes, it’s all about just checking a box – buying something and wrapping it up because we feel we have to. Can we do gifts differently? Our guests share their ideas for how to de-emphasize the commercialism of the season. In studio:
- Gwen P. Scott, actor
- Dina Strasser, writer and educator
- Rev. Colin Pritchard, pastor for First Presbyterian Church of Victor
