Coming up on Connections: Thursday, December 13

rocholidayvillage.com

First hour: Parenting LGBTQ youth

Second hour: Rochester's "Holiday Village," and recapturing Rochester's small town vibe

A debate erupted over social media when pop culture reporter and Billy Eichner advised parents-to-be to consider how they would react if they found out their child was gay. Eichner says if parents don't think they could handle that news, they shouldn't become parents at all. We'll talk to guests about their own experiences, both as children and parents, and we'll discuss the reactions to Eichner's comments. In studio:

  • Tamara Leigh, director of communications for the Out Alliance and mother of two
  • Kim, mother of an LGBTQ youth
  • Pamela Dayton, mother of a transgender youth
  • Karen Bradbury, mother of a transgender teenager
  • Ed Popil (aka Mrs. Kasha Davis), local drag performer and step-parent

Then in our second hour, Rochester has a Holiday Village, complete with an outdoor skating rink. Last weekend saw thousands of people come out to shop for local goods, eat, and skate. And there was a common refrain: This is what towns used to feel like. But is that true? Do we become overly nostalgic, constructing narratives of the past that are overly positive? We'll talk about that, and we'll explore how the winter village could become a permanent December fixture. In studio:

  • Jenna Knauf, owner of Bella Events Group and co-founder of the Roc Holiday Village
  • Kelli Marsh, professional photographer and co-founder of the Roc Holiday Village
  • Sean McCarthy, owner of McCarthy Tents & Events and co-founder of the Roc Holiday Village
  • Fred Amato, president of the Charlotte-Genesee Lighthouse Historical Society
