"Code Blue Alert" at Open Door Mission as storm approaches

Rochester's Open Door Mission shelter is filled to capacity, but they'll open their doors this weekend to those who need to protect themselves from the snowstorm and bitter cold hitting the region this weekend.

Executive Director Anna Valeria-Iseman says a "Code Blue" is in effect which means no one will be turned away from shelter in these conditions.

``We've been consistently full as well, and also placing some overflow when it gets colder, so we're absolutely expecting that this weekend," she said.

Valeria-Iseman says there are those who will stay away from shelters, even in frigid cold and snow, which is predicted for Rochester.

``Folks over at the tent encampment are an example.  They know we are here, they know we are available, and often times they will chose to stay where they are"

"The tent encampment is in a very unique position geographically.  And it is a wind tunnel.  So if we're getting issues of wind chills, that to me is something that might actually get some people to come out of the elements and stay somewhere,” she said.

Valeria-Iseman adds they are expecting their beds to be full, and with winter snowstorm expected, the Open Door Mission will take anyone and everyone.

The mission’s shelter is located at 210 Main Street in Rochester.
