Arrest in domestic violence homicide in Gates

Spectrum News

40 year old Doris Carrasquillo of Gates is facing 2nd degree murder charges in connection with the death of her partner, 28 year old Kashmire Redd, who identified as transgender.

Police say Carrasquillo stabbed Redd following an argument early Monday morning.

Gates police Chief Jim VanBrederode says this is the latest in a number of notable domestic violence cases, and he said the message from this case is there are places people can go if they need help.

"There are plenty of organizations like the Willow Domestic Violence Advocacy group. All confidential stuff, services are available for you if you are in an abusive relationship.  There are a lot of services out there to protect you and your kids, but you have to reach out and get it," he said.

VanBrederode says calling 9-1-1 will also connect victims with the right people.

Willow Domestic Violence Center President and CEO Jaime Saunders says there are more than 50 thousand calls to 9-1-1 for domestic disputes each year in Monroe County.

And the rate of intimate partner violence among the transgender population is higher.
