AAA Halloween safety tips

AAA of Western and Central New York is stressing safety as trick-or-treaters will be out en masse this Halloween.

Spokesperson Elizabeth Carey says it promises to be a very busy night on the roads.

"Over 40 million children are expected to trick or treat on Halloween, so it's up to motorists as the adults, to be extra careful on the roads.  When you're heading home from work or driving through neighborhoods, be aware of children as they're running around attempting to get candy, in costume," she said.

She says for adults going to Halloween parties, they should consider ride-sharing, use a designated driver or at least have a plan in place to get home safely.

Almost half of the fatal crashes on Halloween involve alcohol-impaired drivers.

AAA notes that during the Halloween holiday period between 6 pm and 6 am the next day, for the years 2012 through 2016, 168 people were killed in drunk-driving crashes.

And finally, cars are more than twice as likely to be vandalized tonight than on a regular day.

But you can avoid having your car egged or even stolen.

"Park in a garage, and if that's not possible, park in a well-lit area.  But no matter what, make sure your car is locked, and no valuables are in sight." she said.

AAA also says generous lighting outside your home should keep the vandals away, and provide safe passage for trick-or-treaters or party guests.
