(WXXI News, AP) Charles Tan, the Pittsford man who had murder charges against him dismissed in the death of his father, pled not guilty on Saturday to the new charges against him in a federal indictment.
Tan entered the not guilty plea in a court appearance in Syracuse to a three-count federal indictment on gun charges. Tan is accused of receiving a shotgun and ammunition with "intent to commit, among other felonies, Murder in the Second Degree, Manslaughter in the First Degree, and Manslaughter in the Second Degree."
Tan is accused of acquiring a shotgun and ammunition from a Walmart in Cortland in 2015 and lying to a store employee to obtain the gun.
Canadian citizen Charles Tan was arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents while entering the U.S. on Friday.
Tan attorney Brian DeCarolis says Saturday he's shocked by the charges which "came out of nowhere."
According to the D&C, a detention hearing was ordered for Wednesday. Tan is being held in federal custody until then.
