One man is dead after a confrontation with police near the Mall at Greece Ridge this afternoon.
Greece Police were following up on a call about a missing man, who was possibly suicidal, and just before 3pm, an officer spotted someone of that description in a parking lot near the Sears store.
Sgt. Jared Rene told WXXI News, that “there was some sort of altercation that ensued once the suspect was encountered..and then the officer shot the suspect”
The man is described as being between 20 and 40 years old. Police say he was armed with a handgun at the time, but other details on whether he was pointing it at the officer at the time have not been released yet.
The shooting happened in an overflow parking lot, which was relatively isolated, and officers say there weren't any other people or cars in the immediate vicinity when the shooting happened.
The officer involved in the shooting is identified as Eric Hughes, who has been with the department for nearly 15 years. Rene says that it is likely that Hughes will be placed on administrative leave pending an investigation, which is standard operating procedure in situations like this.
Officials with Wilmorite, which owns the mall, says that mall shoppers and tenants were never in any danger since the incident was quickly contained in an overflow parking lot. They call it "an isolated, unfortunate occurrence, " and say they are cooperating with police.
