Keuka Students & Staff Volunteer To Help With Storm Cleanup

The cleanup in the Penn Yan area is depending on a lot of volunteer help, including dozens of students and staff from nearby Keuka College.

The president of Keuka College Jorge  Diaz-Herrera says more than 175 students, along with dozens of faculty and staff have all been pitching in this week to help their neighbors.. He says shuttle buses have been running constantly from the campus to the Penn Yan and Branchport areas.

“We’re helping with everything, just cleaning up , moving things, saving what can be saved in some of the homes, helping with directing traffic .“

Diaz-Herrera says service and social responsibility are an important part of the focus at Keuka College.

“Our mission also is to create exemplary citizens, to serve the region , this country and the world and that’s exactly what they’re doing.”

Diaz-Herrera estimates that students have invested more than a thousand hours in trying to help Yates County communities recover from this week’s heavy rains.
