Rochester's new train station is chugging ahead - thanks to the approval of a $15-million dollar federal grant.
Now, the project can move into final design and construction.
Cliff Cole, a spokesperson from Amtrak, which will own and operate the new facility, says this is welcomed news.
“It's going to provide the long awaited enhanced amenities and greater connectivity for our passengers who use the empire corridor on the Amtrak line,” Cole says.
The12-thousand square foot station will replace the temporary 1978 facility.
Plans for the new train station include a high-level passenger platform, an underground concourse for pedestrian and baggage access, and an additional track and signal work.
“It comes at a time when Amtrak ridership is reaching record levels,” says Cole. “So anytime we can enhance infrastructure, which this is part of that, it's a great boon for all of our passengers."
The state Department of Transportation plans to select a design-build contractor later this year.
Construction on the project is slated to start in 2014.
