Flu on the Rise in Rochester, But Could be a Relatively Mild Season Overall

There have been 154 confirmed cases of the flu in Monroe County so far this season.

At UR Medicine hospitals and outpatient clinics, there has been a recent uptick in the number of patients with the flu in the last few weeks.

But Dr. John Treanor, UR Medicine's chief of infectious diseases, says he suspects this may end up being a slightly milder flu season compared to the last couple of years.

"Just because all of the viruses we're seeing so far across the country are very similar to the viruses that circulated last year, so there's a little bit more immunity in the population than there was before and that may tamp down the spread of the virus compared to previous years. But I still think we’ll see a substantial amount of flu in Monroe County.”

Dr. Treanor said flu season has probably not reached its peak yet. And it is not too late to get a vaccination.
