Reminder: OTC Pain Relievers May Make Flu Shot Less Effective

There is still time to get a flu shot before flu season peaks.

But Dr. John Treanor, chief of Infectious Disease at UR Medicine, reminds anyone planning on getting vaccinated to avoid taking over-the-counter pain medications like Tylenol and ibuprofen at the time of your shot because they can make it less effective.

"The things that those medications inhibit are important in the antibody response. By taking the non-steroidal type of drugs, you may be directly interfering with the body's ability to make antibodies."

The Monroe County Health Department says there have only been a few confirmed cases of the flu so far this season. The flu is typically more widespread after the holidays and early in the new year.
