Irondequoit moves toward lowering the speed limit on town roads

Spectrum News

The Town of Irondequoit is taking steps toward reducing the speed limit on town roads. Supervisor Dave Seeley says the proposals would reduce the overall speed limit to 30 miles an hour, down from 35.

The legislation would also target roadways near Irondequoit schools, reducing speed on those roads to 25 miles an hour.  Seeley notes that most schools in the town have zones where drivers have to slow down further during school hours, and the speed limit in those zones would be reduced to 20 miles per hour.

Seeley says this all just makes sense, given the nature of the neighborhoods in Irondequoit.

“We are the densest suburb in Monroe County, we’re probably the most that resembles the city of Rochester just by way of our roadways and our neighborhoods just being compact, but really, most of the other inner-ring suburbs are already at a 30 mile per hour speed limit," Seeley told WXXI News.

Seeley says the idea of lowering the town speed limit has been around for a while, but got extra emphasis after the incident last year where a 14 year old boy died after being struck by a car while walking to Irondequoit High School.

There will be a public hearing on the speed reduction proposals on March 20th, and Seeley says it's possible the new speed limits will be in effect sometime this Spring.
