The Rochester City School District is expanding its pre-kindergarten program starting next month.
Beverly Burrell-Moore, the district's Deputy Superintendent for Teacher and Learning, says more than 800 children will be able to attend full-day pre-K thanks to a $6 million dollar grant from the state. “So that’s more reading, that’s learning more math strategies. That’s more time working on the computer. It’s more about expanding opportunities and enriching the lives of students in our full-day pre-k program as they get ready to enter kindergarten.”
Rochester received by far the largest pre-k grant in last year' state budget. Burrell-Moore says that's due to the city's high poverty rate, but also because of the community's willingness to support children and their education.
The 50 remaining spaces in the full-day pre-k program will be assigned by lottery. Parents are asked to call 262-8140 to enter the lottery.
