Mayor Tom Richards and Monroe County Executive Maggie Brooks read a joint proclamation today, marking October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
According to statistics from Alternatives for Battered Women and the Domestic Violence Consortium, one in four women and one in seven men will become victims of domestic violence in their life.
Over 62-thousand incidents are reported in Monroe County each year, but research shows over 70 percent of domestic violence incidents are never reported.
Jaime Saunders is CEO of Alternatives for Battered Women
Saunders says it's up to everyone to join in on the conversation to stop abuse from happening, by talking with our kids, friends, neighbors and co-workers and attend events that support the work of ABW and the Domestic Violence Consortium.
Several events are planned this month to support those agencies.
